Minecraft is a sandbox video game developed by Swedish video game developer Mojang Studios. The game was created by Markus "Notch" Persson in the Java programming language. Following a few pre-release versions of the secret test, first publicly announced in May 2009 before it was fully released in November 2011, Jens "Jeb" Bergensten then took the reins. Minecraft has since been shipped to a few other platforms and is the best-selling video game, with over 238 million copies sold and nearly 140 million active users since 2021.

In Minecraft, players explore a blocky, systematic 3D world-class environment, and can discover and unleash raw materials, art tools and materials, and build buildings, land objects and simple machines. Depending on the game mode, players can fight against computer-controlled crowds, and collaborate or compete with other players in the same world. Game modes include a survival mode, in which players must acquire resources to build the world and save lives, as well as a creative mode, in which players have unlimited resources and access to the aircraft. Players can modify the game to create new game resources, items, and assets.

Previous versions of the game have received serious criticism, won several awards and are considered one of the greatest video games of all time. The social media platform, parodies, adaptability, sales, and annual Minecon meetings have played a major role in game development. The game has also been used in educational institutions to teach chemistry, computer-assisted design, and computer science. In 2014, Mojang and Minecraft intellectual property were purchased by Microsoft for $ 2.5 billion. A host of spin-off games have also been produced, such as Minecraft: Story Mode, Minecraft Dungeons, and the Minecraft Earth mobile game.
